The Monument

The reward for climbing the Monument's 311 steep steps is a panoramic view of the centre of London and beyond. The column was designed by Christopher Wren, and erected in 1677 to commemorate the devastating Great Fire 11 years earlier, which started close to this spot. The reliefs that decorate its base depict Charles II supervising the reconstruction of the capital.
